If an employer violates any of these exceptions, they may be liable for \u201cwrongful termination.\u201d\u00a0 If an employer fires an employee for an\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unlawful<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0reason, then the employee may be able to bring a successful claim against the employer for wrongful termination.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees who are fired in violation of an employment contract, for discriminatory reasons, or for exercising certain legal rights may have a wrongful termination claim. In California, most employees work at will, which means they can be fired at any time, with or without notice.
